An essential oil diffuser comes in two main kinds: ultrasonic models that mix oil into a tank of water, and waterless nebulizing models that spray oil as a fine mist. This guide compares six of them from their Amazon listings, and it puts the pet safety question first because oils and cats are a documented concern.
The quick answer: for an all-night bedroom diffuser, the URPOWER 500 mL lists up to 10 hours per fill, the longest runtime of the ultrasonic models here. For a desk or a small space, the InnoGear 100 mL is the compact option. For a large area and pure oil, the URPOWER waterless model is the only nebulizer here. If you have a cat, read the pet section below before you buy any of them. We read the listings on 2026-10-17 and did not test any diffuser. Check the current price on Amazon.
Oils and pets: read this first
Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine published an article on diffusers and cats, dated November 14, 2019. It says that when essential oils are used in fragrance diffusers, the oils are widely distributed within a room. It adds that some diffusers release micro-droplets that settle on fur, which a cat may swallow while grooming, and that a tipped diffuser can spill oil. It lists basil, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, peppermint, pine, tea tree and thyme among the oils that are toxic to cats. It says inhaling these oils can cause respiratory irritation and foreign body pneumonia in cats, with signs that include watery eyes and nose, drooling, vomiting and trouble breathing. For a cat that shows signs, it says to move the cat to fresh air, seek emergency care if it does not recover quickly, and call the Pet Poison Helpline or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. It also says cat owners should consult their veterinarian before introducing new products.
That article covers cats only and does not mention dogs, so this guide makes no claim about dogs. None of the six listings below is a pet-safety guarantee, and a listing that says “safe for pets” is the seller’s wording. Ask your veterinarian before you diffuse around any pet. How we chose and what the listings leave out
All six are essential oil diffusers on Amazon, chosen to cover ultrasonic and waterless types and tank sizes from 100 mL to 500 mL. The criteria are the tank or oil capacity, the runtime the listing states, the timer options, and any noise or coverage figure.
- Only two listings state a noise figure: the ASAKUKI says lower than 23 dB, and the SALKING says less than 20 dB. Both are the sellers’ own wording.
- Only the Gooamp and the URPOWER waterless model state a coverage figure. The first is for use as a mini humidifier, and the second says “under optimal conditions”.
- Benefit claims on the listings, such as mood or breathing effects, are left out. This page does not verify them.

Worked example: which tank lasts an 8-hour night?
Divide the tank by the listed hours to get an average use per hour, then compare with an 8-hour night. This is our arithmetic from the listing figures, not a measurement.
- URPOWER 500 mL: 500 mL over up to 10 hours is about 50 mL per hour. An 8-hour night fits with 2 hours to spare.
- Gooamp 200 mL: 200 mL over 6 to 8 hours is about 25 to 33 mL per hour. An 8-hour night fits only at the top of the listed range.
- InnoGear 100 mL: intermittent mode lists 6 to 8 hours, about 12.5 to 17 mL per hour, so an 8-hour night fits only at the top of that range. Continuous mode lists 3 to 4 hours, so it cannot last the night.
- URPOWER waterless: the listing says mid setting uses about 0.63 mL per hour. At 8 hours a day that is 0.63 x 8 = about 5 mL a day, so 300 mL lasts about 60 days. That matches the listing’s own 60 days and 100 mL in about 20 days.
The ASAKUKI and SALKING listings state no runtime per fill, so the same check cannot be done for them. Their timers stop at 3 hours and 4 hours, and both also list an ON mode, so an 8-hour night depends on how long a fill lasts in that mode, which the listings do not say.
Conflicting and missing figures on the listings
- URPOWER 500 mL: the title says 4 timer settings, and the bullet lists 1, 3 or 6 hours or ON. That is four choices counting ON, so the two agree. The listing also says to clean the unit at least once a week.
- URPOWER waterless: the 3,000 sq ft figure is “under optimal conditions”. The listing does not say what those conditions are.
- InnoGear: the title says up to 8 hours and the bullet gives 3 to 4 hours in continuous mode. The 8-hour figure applies to the intermittent mode only.
- SALKING: the listing makes salt lamp health claims. We did not verify them and do not repeat them.

Water and cleaning
The US EPA says that for cool mist or ultrasonic humidifiers you should clean the appliance according to the manufacturer’s instructions and change out the water as directed, and it recommends distilled water because that reduces the risk of dispersing minerals into the air. The EPA page is about humidifiers and does not mention diffusers, so we cite it only as the closest official guidance for ultrasonic devices that mist water. Mistakes to avoid and who should skip buying
- Do not assume “pet safe” on a listing means safe. Ask your veterinarian, especially if you have a cat.
- Do not leave a diffuser where a pet can tip it over. The Texas A&M article names spilled oil as a way a cat is exposed.
- Do not expect a long runtime from a 100 mL tank in continuous mode.
- Skip a diffuser if a household member reacts to scent. This page makes no health claims.
Frequently asked questions
Which diffuser here runs the longest?
The URPOWER 500 mL lists up to 10 hours per fill. The URPOWER waterless model lists about 60 days for 300 mL of oil at mid setting and 8 hours a day.
Are essential oil diffusers safe for cats?
Texas A&M’s veterinary college says diffused oils spread through a room and can harm cats, with tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender among the oils it lists. It advises asking a veterinarian before introducing new products. The article does not cover dogs.
What is the difference between ultrasonic and waterless diffusers?
Per the listings, ultrasonic models mix oil into a tank of water, and the URPOWER waterless model uses no water or heat and is designed for pure essential oils.
Do I need distilled water?
The EPA recommends distilled water for ultrasonic humidifiers to reduce the dispersal of minerals. Its page does not cover diffusers, so check each manual.
Which has a stated noise level?
The ASAKUKI says lower than 23 dB and the SALKING says less than 20 dB. The other four listings state none.
Should I check the price?
