A good humidifier is one whose tank, mist output and room size match your room, and whose parts you will actually clean. This guide compares six humidifiers from their Amazon listings. It shows the figures where a listing disagrees with itself, and it adds what the US EPA says about humidity and care.

The quick answer: for a typical bedroom, the DREO HM311 (300 sq ft listed) and the Levoit 2.5L top-fill model (219 sq ft listed) are the simpler cool mist choices. For a larger room, the Levoit 6.2L (536 sq ft) and the Levoit evaporative 4.5L (600 sq ft) list the bigger coverage. For warm mist, only the Levoit OasisMist here offers it. We read the listings on 2026-10-17 and did not test any unit. Check the current price on Amazon.

How we chose and what the listings leave out

All six are humidifiers sold on Amazon. They cover three kinds: ultrasonic cool mist, ultrasonic warm and cool mist, and evaporative. The criteria are tank size, listed room area, listed noise, runtime, and how the listing says you clean it.

  • Dimensions and weight were not captured for four of the six, so this guide gives them only for the Levoit 2.5L and the Levoit evaporative model.
  • All six listings state a noise figure in decibels, but the Levoit 2.5L gives two different figures.
  • Runtime and room-area claims are the sellers’ own. They are not measurements made here.

Specs side by side (from the listings, checked 2026-10-17)

Model (ASIN) Type Tank Listed area Listed noise Listed runtime
Levoit Top Fill 2.5L, Classic 160 (B0C2C9NHZW) Ultrasonic cool mist 2.5 L 219 sq ft 28 dB in the table; as low as 25 dB in the title and bullet 25 hours; 190 mL/h maximum output
DREO 4L HM311 (B0CCY6VG8Z) Ultrasonic cool mist 4 L 300 sq ft 28 dB 36 hours
Levoit OasisMist 4.5L (B0B1DQ8KV3) Ultrasonic warm and cool mist 4.5 L 430 sq ft 26 dB in the title 45 hours in the title
Levoit Evaporative 4.5L (B0GR928CD6) Evaporative with a wick filter 4.5 L 600 sq ft 19 dB on low fan speed 40 hours; 400 mL/h output
Levoit 6.2L Smart (B0GR99R7XD) Ultrasonic cool mist 6.2 L 536 sq ft 26 dB 62 hours; 320 mL/h output
Lacidoll 8L (B0CX8V4G15) Ultrasonic cool mist 2.1 gal (8 L in the title) 800 sq ft in the table; 500 to 800 sq ft in a bullet 35 dB 48 hours in a bullet; 24 hours in the table; 300 mL/h output

Worked example: how long does a full tank last at maximum output?

A listed runtime is usually for the lowest setting. For a check at the other end, divide the tank by the maximum output the listing states. This is our arithmetic from the listing figures, not a measurement.

  • Levoit 2.5L: 2,500 mL / 190 mL/h is about 13.2 hours, against a listed runtime of 25 hours.
  • Levoit 6.2L: 6,200 mL / 320 mL/h is about 19.4 hours, against 62 hours.
  • Levoit Evaporative 4.5L: 4,500 mL / 400 mL/h is about 11.3 hours, against 40 hours.
  • Lacidoll 8L: 8,000 mL / 300 mL/h is about 26.7 hours, against 48 hours (or 24 hours in its table).

So for a 12 ft by 15 ft bedroom of 180 sq ft, any of these lists enough area on paper. If you run one at high every night, plan to refill the tank once or twice a day for the first three at maximum output, and about once a day for the Lacidoll. The DREO and OasisMist listings state no maximum output, so the same check cannot be done for them.

Conflicting figures on the listings

  • Levoit 2.5L: noise is 28 dB in the specs table and as low as 25 dB in the title and bullet. The title also says “for Large Room” while the table lists 219 sq ft.
  • Lacidoll 8L: runtime is 48 hours in a bullet and 24 hours in the table. The humidity range is 45% to 95% in one place and a 40% minimum with a 90% maximum in another. Coverage is 800 sq ft in the title and 500 to 800 sq ft in a bullet.
  • Levoit OasisMist: the control panel is listed with 5 buttons in one place and 4 in another.
  • Levoit Evaporative: voltage is listed as “100 volts, 240 volts”. Check that against your outlet before you buy.
  • DREO: the power is listed as 26 watt-hours, which is a unit of energy, not power. We did not try to correct it.

What the EPA says about humidity and humidifier care

The US EPA says to keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and to use a dehumidification strategy if humidity stays above 60 percent. For cool mist or ultrasonic humidifiers it says to clean the appliance according to the manufacturer’s instructions and to change out the water as directed. It also recommends distilled water, which reduces the risk of dispersing minerals into the air. The EPA page does not compare cool mist with warm mist, so this guide makes no claim about which is safer. The EPA also says relative humidity can be measured with an inexpensive moisture or humidity meter. The humidity guidance was last updated April 1, 2026 and we opened it on 2026-10-17. Mistakes to avoid and who should skip buying

  • Do not set the humidity above the EPA’s ceiling of 60 percent. A target range of 30 to 50 percent is the EPA’s ideal.
  • Do not skip the cleaning schedule in the manual. A tank that is hard to reach is the one that stays dirty.
  • Do not trust the room area on the box without a meter. Listed areas are the sellers’ own.
  • Skip a humidifier if a humidity meter already shows your room inside 30 to 50 percent. A doctor decides what humidity is right for any medical need, and this page makes no health claims.
