Many odors travel as gases, and the US EPA guide to air cleaners says most filters are designed for either particles or gases. A purifier for smells therefore needs a filter built for gases, usually activated carbon, next to the HEPA filter that catches dust. This guide checks which listings name one.
The quick answer: the Coway Airmega 250 and the Levoit Core 400S-P both name an activated carbon filter in their listing bullets and state large-room coverage, 1,860 sq ft in 60 minutes and 1,733 sq ft once per hour. No listing states how much carbon its filter holds, so every odor claim below is the maker’s claim.
How we chose and what the listings leave out
We read eight Amazon listings on 2026-10-17 and did not test any of them. A model made the list only if its title or bullets name a carbon, deodorization or odor filter. Models whose bullets mention only a HEPA filter were left out, because HEPA is a particle filter.
- No listing states the weight or thickness of its carbon. The EPA guide says activated carbon filters can be effective when a large amount of material is used, and that the thicker the better. The listings give no way to check that.
- No standard rating exists for gas filters. The EPA guide says there are no widely used performance rating systems for portable air cleaners designed to remove gases, and that the CADR rating covers particles only.
- Only four of the eight listings state a noise figure (Winix 5510, Levoit Core 400S-P, Levoit Core 200S-P, MOOKA KJ190H), and each is a low-speed or sleep-mode figure.
- The Coway Airmega 250 listing says it reduces 99 percent of volatile organic compounds and odor. It does not state the test conditions.

Worked example: a 15 by 20 foot kitchen and living area
For example, a kitchen and living area measuring 15 ft by 20 ft is 300 sq ft. The EPA sizing chart lists a minimum CADR of 195 cfm for 300 sq ft, based on an 8-foot ceiling. CADR rates particles, not smells, so the chart only tells you how much air the unit should move for that floor area. It does not measure odor removal.
Three listings state coverage at 4.8 air changes per hour, which lets you compare them directly with the 300 sq ft room. The Winix 5510 lists 392 sq ft and the Honeywell HPA4300W lists 354 sq ft, so both are above 300. The Levoit Core 200S-P lists 140 sq ft, so it is too small for this room. The other listings use a one-hour or 30-minute basis, so their larger figures should not be compared with 392 or 354. The EPA guide also says an air cleaner filters less air at a lower fan speed, so a quiet low-speed figure does not show how the unit behaves when it runs hard on a strong smell.
Figures that conflict or look odd on the listings
- The Winix 5510 title says 1,881 sq ft in 1 hour and its bullet says 1,882 sq ft. The listing also gives 392 sq ft for the AHAM Verifide figure. We show both and do not pick one.
- The Coway Airmega 100 title says “HEPA and Carbon Filter”, while its bullets say “deodorization filter” and never name activated carbon.
- The Honeywell HPA4300W gives 354 sq ft at 4.8 times per hour and 1,718 sq ft at 1 time per hour. They describe the same unit at two different air-change rates.
- The MOOKA KJ190H gives 2,200 sq ft in the title and no coverage figure in its bullets. The Levoit Core 200S-P lists a height of 4.96 in, which we show as written.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying on the HEPA claim alone. HEPA is a particle filter, and the EPA guide says most filters are designed for either particles or gases.
- Treating a scent feature as a filter. A scent pad or cartridge adds fragrance. It does not remove the source of a smell.
- Trusting one low-speed noise number. The EPA guide says more air passes through the filter at higher fan speeds, and only the lowest-speed figure is stated here.
- Comparing coverage figures that use different bases, such as 392 sq ft at 4.8 times per hour against 1,882 sq ft in one hour.
- Expecting a purifier to cure a musty smell. The EPA guide says portable air cleaners do not address the cause of mold and musty odors.
Who should skip buying
Skip this list if the smell comes from a moisture or mold problem, because the EPA guide says the source has to be fixed, and an air cleaner may only reduce some odors. Skip it too if you need a stated amount of carbon before you buy. None of these listings gives one, so ask the maker for the filter specification first.
What the EPA guide says
The US EPA guide to air cleaners was opened on 2026-10-17 and shows “Last updated on October 1, 2026”. It says to choose a portable air cleaner with an activated carbon filter or another filter designed to remove gases, that such filters can be effective when a large amount of material is used, and that the CADR rating system is for particles only. It also says all filters need regular replacement and that a dirty, overloaded filter will not work well. Source: US EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Frequently asked questions
Does a HEPA filter remove odors?
The EPA guide says most filters are designed to filter either particles or gases. A HEPA filter is a particle filter, so for gases and smells the guide says to choose a unit with an activated carbon filter or another filter designed to remove gases.
How much carbon does each model have?
None of the eight listings states the weight or thickness of its carbon. The EPA guide says activated carbon filters can be effective when a large amount of material is used, so the maker’s filter specification is the place to ask.
Which models name an activated carbon filter?
The Coway Airmega 250, the Levoit Core 400S-P, the Honeywell HPA4300W and the Levoit Core 200S-P name activated carbon. The Winix 5510 names a carbon filter, the MOOKA KJ190H names carbon pellets, and the Coway Mighty and Airmega 100 say deodorization filter in their bullets.
Is CADR a measure of odor removal?
No. The EPA guide says the CADR rating system is for particles only, and that no widely used rating system exists for filters designed to remove gases.
Will a purifier fix a musty smell?
Not by itself. The EPA guide says portable air cleaners do not address the cause of mold and musty odors, and that they may only reduce some odors without resolving a mold and moisture problem.
How do I check whether a room is too big for a model?
Multiply the room length by the width to get square feet and compare it with the coverage on the listing, using the same basis. In the worked example a 300 sq ft room is too large for the 140 sq ft Levoit Core 200S-P.
